Relationship & Couples Therapy
Rediscover a Deeper, More Meaningful Bond
Every couple experiences moments of conflict and phases of disconnect. What separates struggling relationships from resilient ones isn’t the absence of conflict; it’s whether partners have the tools to reconnect after and grow stronger through it.
At Lumen Therapy, our Denver therapists are trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-backed approach to couples therapy grounded in the science of adult attachment and bonding. We help you and your partner understand the cycle you’re caught in, reach the emotions underneath it, and build a more secure, lasting connection.
You don’t have to already know how to fix things. You just have to be willing to show up together.
What Is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy, sometimes called relationship or marriage counseling, is dedicated time with a therapist to help you and your partner understand the patterns driving conflict, distance or disconnection in your relationship.
Our therapists primarily draw on EFT, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and refined over more than 30 years of research. EFT holds that couples aren’t fighting about the dishes or the schedule — they’re fighting about connection. Beneath most recurring arguments is an unmet need to feel seen, valued and emotionally safe with your partner. When that need goes unmet, couples fall into predictable negative cycles, like pursue-withdraw or criticize-defend, that leave both partners feeling more alone.
Rather than teaching communication tricks that fade once the pressure is on, couples therapy at Lumen helps you and your partner understand why those cycles happen, so you can reach each other in the moments that matter most. Through this work, couples feel stronger communicating about what matters most while building a stronger sense of trust and intimacy.
Goals of Couples Therapy
Our approach to couples and relationship therapy is guided by a few core goals:
- Help you and your partner create a secure, trusting bond
- Interrupt the negative cycle and shift how you interact in moments of conflict
- Uncover the vulnerable emotions and unmet needs driving disconnection
- Reshape old emotional responses into healthier, more connected ones
- Build a relationship both partners can return to and feel safe in, long after therapy ends
- Heal from relationship injuries, negative patterns, or harmful histories
- Feel closer through challenging topics like finances, kids, intimacy, physical connection
- Make important decisions about your relationship and family
Who Couples Therapy Can Help
Every relationship hits rough patches, and there's no issue too small or too serious to bring into the room. Our therapists frequently work with couples navigating:
- Recurring conflict or communication breakdowns
- Feeling distant, disconnected or like roommates
- Rebuilding trust after betrayal or infidelity
- Major life transitions, including parenthood, career change or relocation
- Differences around intimacy, commitment or the future of the relationship
- Exploring identity and sexuality
- Blended family or parenting disagreements
- Premarital preparation and relationship strengthening
- Repairing after chronic disconnection or resentment
We also bring a culturally responsive lens to our work, recognizing that identity, background and lived experience shape how partners give and receive love.
Our Approach
No two relationships are the same, so no two therapy plans should be either. Our approach is anchored in emotionally focused, attachment oriented modalities. Depending on your relationship’s needs, your therapist may also draw from:
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) — an attachment-based approach to understanding the cycle and rebuilding connection, trust, and closeness
- The Gottman Method — provides practical, science-based tools to disarm conflict, deepen intimacy, and build shared meaning so partners can break out of repetitive gridlock.
- PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy) — weaves together neuroscience, attachment theory, and arousal regulation to help partners understand how their nervous systems interact in real time—inviting you to shift out of threat responses and build a secure-functioning partnership.
- Relational Life Therapy (RLT) — cuts through relational defense mechanisms to address power imbalances, accountability, and grandiosity or shame. It invites partners to step out of “being right” and into fierce intimacy and mutual respect.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) — uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain process individual traumatic memories and relational triggers, ensuring past pain stops dictating how you react to your partner today. Doing this with your partner in couples therapy can help you heal relationally.
- Somatic Approaches — uses gentle body awareness and breath to safely discharge trapped stress, helping your nervous system heal and return to a natural state of balance. This individual therapy approach can be integrated to support co-regulation between partners, not just self-regulation with an individual.
- Internal Family Systems (IFS) — helps you understand and integrate how different parts of yourself develop their unique strengths and protections. Exploring how these internal parts show up in your most important relationships can unburden old protective patterns, heal underlying wounds, and respond to your partner from a place of calm, compassionate Self-energy.
Together, we’ll help you and your partner identify the core emotional needs beneath your conflict and build a plan for healing and reconnection that’s grounded in research and centered on your relationship.
Frequently Asked Questions
There's no set timeline. Some couples come in for a specific conflict and see meaningful shifts in a matter of months. Others stay in therapy longer to do deeper attachment work. You and your therapist will regularly revisit your goals together.
Couples and relationship sessions are typically longer than individual sessions, since more people are involved. Many people enjoy a 75 or 90 minute session to allow more time for everyone to be heard, understood, and to work with the relational dynamics. Your therapist will work with you to help determine the length best suited to your goals.
Yes. It's common for partners to show up with different levels of readiness. Part of the early work in couples therapy is helping both of you feel heard, even if you're starting from different places. We invite you to share your worries and concerns about the process with your therapist to help them better understand you.
Yes. What you share in session stays between you, your partner and your therapist, with the standard legal and ethical exceptions your therapist will review with you at the start of care.
You may have heard this, but it is not common for insurance companies to cover couples therapy even if they do cover individual therapy. We are not paneled with any insurance companies or medicaid. Though we don't bill insurance directly, we're happy to provide a detailed receipt (superbill) so you can seek reimbursement as an out-of-network provider, if your plan allows. We accept most HSA/FSA cards, along with cash, checks and major credit cards.
Yes, we offer both virtual sessions via Zoom and in-person sessions, depending on your comfort and availability. All of our therapists offer both virtual and in-person sessions, depending on their availability. We find it works best when the partners are in the room together for virtual sessions.
If you and your partner feel stuck in the same argument, disconnected, or simply want a stronger foundation, couples therapy can help. Reach out and we can talk through whether our approach is a good fit for your relationship.
