Family Therapy

Reconnect and Rebuild as a Family

Every family goes through seasons of tension, distance or misunderstanding. What determines whether a family grows closer through those seasons, or further apart, is whether there’s a safe space to be heard and understood.

At Lumen Therapy, our Denver therapists use Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), an approach grounded in the science of attachment and bonding, to help families move through conflict, disconnection and unmet emotional needs together.

You don’t have to have everything figured out as a family before you walk through the door. You just have to be willing to show up together.

What Is Family Therapy?

Family therapy is dedicated time with a therapist to help your family understand the patterns driving conflict, distance or disconnection between family members, whether that’s between parents and children, siblings, or the family unit as a whole.

Our therapists primarily draw on EFFT, developed from the same attachment research behind Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples and individuals. EFFT holds that family members, like romantic partners, are wired to seek connection, safety and understanding from one another. When that connection is strained by conflict, life transitions, trauma or simply the natural friction of growing up and growing older together, families can fall into negative patterns that leave everyone feeling more distant.

Rather than assigning blame or focusing only on behavior, family therapy at Lumen helps you understand the emotional needs underneath those patterns, so your family can respond to each other with more compassion and connection.

Goals of Family Therapy

Our approach to family therapy is guided by a few core goals:

  • Identify negative family patterns and understand where they come from
  • Reframe distress within the family and between parent and child
  • Increase awareness of each family member's emotional and attachment needs
  • Open lines of communication around needs that have gone unspoken or unmet
  • Help your family build a foundation of safety and understanding that lasts beyond therapy

Who Family Therapy Can Help

Every family faces rough patches, and there's no issue too small or too serious to bring into the room. Our therapists frequently work with families navigating:

  • Parent-child conflict or communication breakdowns
  • Major life transitions, including divorce, remarriage or relocation
  • Blended family dynamics and adjustment
  • Supporting a child or teen through anxiety, depression or identity development
  • Rebuilding trust after a rupture or period of distance
  • Grief and loss within the family system
  • Multigenerational tension or differing expectations
  • Adult children and their parents, or adult siblings wanting to understand or process family dynamics
  • Feeling stuck in the same conflicts or roles as a family

We also bring a culturally responsive lens to our work, recognizing that culture, identity and lived experience shape how each family communicates, expresses care, and defines connection.

Our Approach

No two families are the same, so no two therapy plans should be either. Our approach is anchored in emotionally focused, attachment oriented modalities. Depending on your family’s needs, your therapist may draw from:

  • Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) — an attachment-based approach to understanding family patterns and rebuilding connection
  • IFS (Internal Family Systems) — helps family members understand and integrate how different parts of themselves develop unique strengths and protections. By exploring how these internal parts react to one another during tension, families can step out of automatic defensiveness and relate with calm, compassionate clarity.
  • Narrative Family Therapy— invites families to separate their identity from their problems—rewriting the dominant, blame-heavy narratives that keep everyone stuck so you can author a new story grounded in your family’s collective values and strengths.
  • Systemic Family Therapy — examines the unspoken rules, roles, and feedback loops across the entire family ecosystem, helping you understand how individual behaviors are deeply interconnected and how shifting one part of the system transforms the whole.
  • Attachment-Focused Family Therapy — helps repair trust and emotional ruptures between family members, fostering a secure, supportive home base where everyone feels seen, safe, and emotionally connected.
  • Structural Family Therapy — focuses on reshaping family organization by establishing healthy boundaries, strengthening parental leadership, and clarifying roles so the household functions with greater stability and less friction.
  • Solution-Focused Family Therapy — focuses on your family’s existing strengths and past successes to build immediate, realistic strategies for the specific challenges in front of you today.

Together, we’ll help your family identify the core emotional needs beneath your conflict and build a plan for healing and reconnection that’s grounded in research and centered on your family.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no set timeline. Some families come in for a specific conflict and see meaningful shifts in a matter of months. Others stay in therapy longer to do deeper relational work. Sometimes a family and the therapist may decide to meet more frequently to accelerate the process and make more time for the therapist to meet with individuals or parts of the family (parents, siblings, or other dyads). You and your therapist will regularly revisit your goals together.

Family therapy sessions are typically longer than individual sessions, since more people are involved. Many people enjoy a 75 or 90 minute session to allow more time for everyone to be heard, understood, and to work with the relational dynamics. Sometimes a family and the therapist may decide to meet more frequently to accelerate the process and make more time for the therapist to meet with individuals or parts of the family (parents, siblings, or other dyads).Your therapist will work with you to help determine the length best suited to your goals.

This depends on your family's needs and goals. Sometimes the whole family attends together. Other times, your therapist may recommend working with specific family members at different points in the process.
