Individual Therapy

A Space to Understand Yourself, Heal, and Grow

Individual therapy is a collaborative process between you and a therapist, focused on helping you understand your emotions, patterns and needs — and use that understanding to build a more authentic, connected life.

At Lumen Therapy, our Denver therapists use Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), alongside attachment focused, interpersonal therapy approaches to help you move through anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, and the negative cycles that keep you feeling stuck.

You don’t have to have all the answers before you walk through the door. You just have to be willing to take the first step.

What Is Individual Therapy?

Often referred to as personal counseling or one-on-one support, individual therapy provides a dedicated space to examine the emotions and patterns beneath the surface. This collaborative journey is entirely flexible, adapting to your unique goals and the specific needs you bring to the room.

At Lumen, our practitioners utilize Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), a method built upon three decades of attachment science. This research-based approach recognizes that we are naturally wired for connection—both with those around us and through a compassionate relationship with ourselves. When trauma, chronic stress, or past wounds disrupt this internal security, it frequently leads to persistent anxiety, depression, or the feeling of being stuck in negative cycles.

Our work goes beyond symptom management, inviting you to safely process the emotional blocks that maintain old behaviors. Through the lens of attachment research, we help you understand your responses, transform underlying pain, and cultivate lasting resilience. Individual therapy at Lumen is designed to help you move through emotional constrictions toward a more authentic and radiant life.

Goals of Individual Therapy

Our approach to individual therapy is guided by a few core goals:

  • Help you develop a more positive, grounded sense of self and your own experiences
  • Teach you to manage vulnerability in a healthy, balanced way
  • Build your capacity for secure attachment, both with others and within yourself
  • Give you research-based tools to navigate life's biggest questions and hardest seasons
  • Move you from surviving your circumstances to actively shaping a more fulfilling life

Who Individual Therapy Can Help

People come to individual therapy for many reasons, and there's no problem too small or too big to bring into the room. Our therapists frequently work with clients navigating:

  • Anxiety and chronic worry
  • Depression and low motivation
  • Relationship concerns and transitions
  • Exploring emotions
  • Stress management and burnout
  • Life transitions, including career, relationship or identity changes
  • Identity development
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma and its lingering effects
  • Feeling stuck in negative thought or behavior cycles

We also bring a culturally responsive lens to our work, recognizing that your identity, background and lived experience shape both your challenges and your path toward healing.

Our Approach

No two people are the same, so no two therapy plans should be either. Depending on your needs, your therapist may draw from:

  • Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) — an attachment-based approach to understanding your emotional and relational world
  • Somatic Approaches — uses gentle body awareness and breath to safely discharge trapped stress, helping your nervous system heal and return to a natural state of balance
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — helps you understand and integrate how different parts of yourself develop their unique strengths and protections. Exploring how these internal parts show up in your most important relationships can unburden old protective patterns, heal underlying wounds, and respond to your partner from a place of calm, compassionate Self-energy.
  • Interpersonal Therapy — understanding how relationships shape your emotional health
  • EMDR — uses bilateral eye movements to help your brain reprocess stuck trauma, transforming painful memories into quiet history.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — identifying and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns
  • Solution-Focused Therapy — building practical strategies for the challenges in front of you

Together, we’ll identify your core emotional needs and build a plan for healing and growth that’s grounded in research and centered on your goals for your own therapy.

We don't bill insurance directly, but we're happy to provide a detailed receipt (superbill) so you can seek reimbursement as an out-of-network provider, if your plan allows. We accept most HSA/FSA cards, along with cash, checks and major credit cards. Unfortunately, clients who receive medicaid benefits must seek providers who are specifically paneled with medicaid.
